We also get a lot of footage that isn’t horror related at all. Since we see the transformation of Jesse from beginning to end, we get a unique look at how the demon posesses his victims. If you are a fan that has watched all four movies prior then you will get a kick out of the small inclusion and allusions, but if you aren’t then be prepared for seemingly out of place conversations with characters that only exist for a brief seconds as an almost deus ex machina technique to explain the situation. However, the film’s final scene ties it in with the original Paranormal Activity in a very cool way. Some of these seem superflous though and are implemented as nothing more than fan service. The story of The Marked Ones happens concurrently to the other events in the series, and has several tie in moments to the other films. Jesse unknowingly has been marked for posession by a demon, and after being bestowed with amazing powers and abilities ( like super strength) slowly falls further and further into darkness. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones follows the story of a recent high school graduate, Jesse and his buddy Hector. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is the first spin-off from the franchise’s main narrative, and while it keeps with the found footage style of storytelling, the heart, soul and terror just isn’t there anymore. Since then the franchise has gotten bigger and spun off numerous sequels. The paranormal themes, intense storytelling and found-footage style made for a perfect storm for horror fans – a type of movie that hadn’t been seen since the Blair Witch Project. Release Date: 23/01/14 – Buy Tickets Hereīack in 2007, Paranormal Activity took the world by storm and made audiences everywhere scream and nearly jump out of their seats. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is followed by Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension in 2015.Format:Cinema (reviewed at Event Cinemas George St.) I hope that the series can keep innovating and someday it might make a film that is creative, scary, and more memorable. There is talk that the witches are building an army of soldiers…we need to see this army and possibly the demon they are working for at some point. All of these films have their moments, but the story really needs to keep moving on and have an endgame goal. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is just another film in the franchise. Here, GoPros are used to change up the story and a fun throwback Simon game works as a medium to the spirit world. Be it the fan cam and the retro style of Paranormal Activity 3 or the Xbox Kinetic scene in Paranormal Activity 4, the filmmakers do a good job with the style. ![]() The movie franchise does a great job being innovative with the product. The main cast of this film feels natural, and I could see them goofing off together…it just doesn’t always make for good storytelling until the ending sequence in every Paranormal Activity film in which all hell breaks loose. ![]() The film also smartly brings back Molly Ephraim as Ali Rey from Paranormal Activity 2 (and one of the few likable characters of the whole series). The first movie was the roughest with the horrible Micah (Micah Sloat) who also appears here. I will say that the movies do a decent job casting actors acting naturally. The idea of a side story in nearly present day is interesting and there are clues to the previous films with flashes of tapes of Katie and Kristi, their grandmother, and the ending which dovetails back to the beginning of the series…unfortunately, it is expected now and leaves the viewer waiting for stuff to happen. The series took a year off in 20 has nuggets into what is occurring in the Paranormal Activity world. It is always interesting to see how the Paranormal Activity films link together and The Marked Ones is no different.
